Alita (or Gally,as she's known in Japan) is found as a head with a still-functioning brain with no memories on a pile of scrap metal discarded by the floating city of Tiphares (Zarum) by the Cyborg Doctor Daisuke Ido. Ido rebuilds her, naming her after his deceased cat. Unknown to Alita, her surrogate father actually leads a double life, for by night-time he roams the streets of the Scrap Yard as a hunter-warrior, a bounty hunter who hunts criminals for cash. Alita,curious as to why Ido disappears off every night, follows him at one point, and becomes instrumental in saving Ido's life from one of his own targets. At this point, as Alita attacks the monster-woman who is about to harm Ido, (this is interpreted differently in the animated version:there Ido is fighting the Brain addict Garyushika (as opposed to Makaku)and his lieutenant just as Alita enters the fray) she instinctively uses a Cyborg fighting technique called Panzer Kunst, or literally 'Armour Art'.It is at this point that Alita's life changes, and she starts on her path to try and reclaim her forgotten past...
